A pretty poor captain anyway so no real loss.

Terrible Hatter !!!

Ponting held the Australian Test and one-day captaincy since he took over from Steve Waugh. He led Australia in 77 Tests of which 48 were wins, the most for any captain. He also captained Australia in a record 228 ODIs and won 164, including two World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

Nick, with the side he inherited from Stephen Waugh, me or you would've had a stunning record as Oz captain.

Do guys like Warne, McGrath, Gillespie, Hayden etc need their skipper telling them what to do?

proves everything. Once the all star xi retired, Ponting's captaincy was shown up as being pretty poor.

Classic example is he doesn't know how to utilize spinners, other than Warne. Even with Warne, Ponting had little input...

take the top performers out of any team and you will initially struggle.

your statements are bold , you ob know v little about cricket, so whats the point answering you.

your comments are made to get a reaction , no more !! I suggest everyone ignores your posts from now on. As im guessin you just like to make stupid statements so you can wind people up.

I don't rate ponting as a captain as without those legends his captaincy was not that good it's easy when you say say Shane get me a wicket or McGrath get me a wicket but since there retirement he has struggled and it proves it with the fact it has been shown numerous times he cannot captain spin with poor fields and the constant change in spinners as he could not manage them but still one of the great bats of the modern era

Feels wierd doing this but I tend to agree that Ponting is a poor captain. If you take his test career in context, whilst there are a lot of wins in there, he has also lost the Ashes three times - once with a very strong side and once with the stronger side of the two - and has overseen the loss of that long unbeaten streak at home and numerous defeats to India. If you bear in mind the strength of team he had available, the relatively weak standard of international cricket over parts of that time (Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the West Indies especially, but also Pakistan, New Zealand and, as soon as they flew abroad, Sri Lanka) it starts to look a lot less impressive.

And what of his skills? How many times in those seven years has he pulled a rabbit out of the hat, created something from nothing? Very few - bringing himself on to bowl at Vaughan in the Trent Bridge test in 2005 was one that I recall - and most of the ones he did come up with appeared filched from Warne (a genuinely classy tactician) and McGrath.

Against that limited portfolio, there have been a lot of fairly high profile gaffes - not just saying "we'll have a bowl mate" but his problems with Krejza and Hauritz, sudden support for Doherty when even my mother could see that he was barely good enough for First Class cricket, frequent and quite frankly pathetic outbursts to Umpires and other players and willingness to condone cheating amongst his own players mark him out as a fairly unlikeable man and a less than stellar leader.

His stats say he is the most successful captain ever for Aus. Aus smashed england 5-0 at home. I agree they lost in England but that does not make a bad captain. You cannot have a record like that and be a poor captain. You might not like the guy but his stats are good.

Stats can lie as according to stats Gillespie is one of only a handful of batsmen to get 200 wickets and a double ton which puts him in the same bracket as the likes of botham but was he in that class no he had a great side to captain got mist of his career but without them his limitations have been apparent not a poor captain just average for me
