| I wasn't on this forum when I saw this happening, so I couldn't comment on it then, but, last year when I went to watch a Derbyshire game vs Kent, I was absolutely disgusted to see that as soon as Rob Key had got out, having made a brilliant hundred, the first thing he did, even before taking his pads off, was to light up a cigarette with Matt Walker. Shocking! They didn't even do this in private; in full view, so that anyone walking round could see. A terrible example to set to young role models. Remember that Key is wanting to push for an international recall. I think that behavior is abysmal! Can you imagine the possibility of a footballer sitting on the bench having just been subsituted, lighting up a fag! |

| No! Absolutely not! Please don't dismiss everything I say C Dog. Practically all sportsman drink. But, for someone who is wanting to get into the England team; I think that is terrible! If you think smoking is a good thing to do - you are an absolute fool! |

I completely agree Tom. I took some pics once at a game between Dorset and Yorkshire, back in the day when minor counties were involved in what is now the Friends Provident Trophy, and caught Darren Lehmann smoking. He saw that I was taking pics, came up to me and told me to not use them in any publication, as it was in his Cricket Australia contract that he couldn't be seen smoking.
In this day and age, to see professionals in any sport smoking, irrespective of how physically fit you need to be to play it, is not really on. |

Slightly contradictory.. smoking and drinking are both bad for you...so why disagree with the comsumption of one and not the other? and i am not dismissing everything you are saying, i just disagree with a lot of your points. so you expect people to not have everyday bad habits just because they are cricketers? It may differ for sports such as football and athletics where prime fitness is paramount, hence why they dont smoke drink and are on special diets. cricketers dont have to be amazingly fit hence why diets etc are relaxed.
many cricketers smoke - shane warne, matthew maynard, rob key, matthew walker etc |

i reckon he called you a fool for the words "I was absolutely disgusted." It does rather sound like my mum..
However Tom I very much agree with you on the topic. Unfortunately people still have the choice to smoke these days and there is nothing to stop them. It's a personal choice at the end of the day but professionals should certainly attempt some effort.
and drinking - well that goes hand in hand with smoking. |

I take your opinion, but I completely disagree! However, I don't wish to argue, for the sake of everyone on the forum.
Too much drinking is bad for you. A little is good for you in fact! A glass of red wine 4 times a week is very good for your heart. There is nothing about smoking which is good for you. That is fact and there is proof!
If you are an international sportsman, it is simple - you should not smoke.
Oh yeah. Try telling my Academy and Midlands coach that cricketers dont need to be fit and follow strict fitness plans. If you are physically fit, it improves your mental fitness i.e. concentration, toughness etc. If you are not mentally fit, you can't possibly make it at a high level!
I hope you understand my point! |

I accept 100% that it is the choice of the person to smoke. But, I think it shows that these kind of people, if they want to make a career out of sport they have to have more will to win! |
