Posted - 19/10/2010 : 21:22:11 I thought I would review my Grizzly which I have had for about 3 months now which I picked up from T****t cricket in Loughborough. The specs of the bat are:
Weight 2lb 10oz 7 Grains on the face High middle 30mm edges Light pick-up
I have always had bats with a high middle and wanted something that was British and handmade. After trawling a number of reviews and forums I decided on Newbery. I initially wanted an Uzi Players, but after a long discussion with the store staff and trying a number of bats I opted for the Grizzly. I had the choice of 2 - a 2lb 9oz which had better quality willow but the profile was very thin and the 2lb 10oz which I bought which had very good willow - 7 straight grains (which is about the minimum I would look for) but the response from hitting a ball of the face was amazing and much better than the 2lb 90z.
It came pre-prepared by Newbery with hammer edge protection, oiled and toe guard but I still knocked it in for a further hour before using it in a game. I removed the stickers from the edges as I didn't like them and think it looks better without. I have had a number of bats over the past 5-6 years from Slazenger to Puma to GN and GM but this had the best feel in terms of quality, balance and pick-up of all of them. The first game I used it I was amazed with the ease that the ball flew to the boundary. The middle is quite long and large on the bat giving me a much greater margin for error when playing attacking shots. I am not really a big hitter of the ball but do like to hit over the top and was astonished when I hit one ball over mid-on and it kept going clipping the top of the tree for six from nothing more then a gentle drive through the line. 2 balls later it went the same but this time over mid-off. My scores have been consistently higher since using the bat with 32, 90 and 64* from the last 3 games of the season.
I am really pleased with the bat and would reccommend Newbery to anyone as well as the Grizzly model itself. When I was reading about them before I bought it - there were mixed reviews, some people rated it and some didn't but I can't fault it. Pictures are below.
